oreilly.jpgI'm in an inquisitive mood today. Does anybody have any answers?
  • I see on Mindhub that the Knuckledraggers improv comedy group performs alternate Thursday nights at M restaurant in the Tower District. Just what is the status of M these days? Some nights I drive by and see bouncers outside and big lines of people waiting to get in, and other nights it's shut up tighter than Reedley on a Tuesday. Is it a restaurant? A bar? A dance club? (And if so, does it have the requisite permits?) Can I still get hummus there?
  • Speaking of Tower restaurants, is Palomino's ever going to put up proper signage? Or at least paint over the faded remnants of the name of the Japanese flower shop/ice cream store/whatever it was that used to be there? I sort of understand Palomino's shabby-chic aesthetic of a little sign propped in the window, but at what point does the storefront just make the block look vaguely dilapidated?
  • Does Mike Oz know that there can be consequences for taking on big bad Bill O'Reilly?
  • Has anyone tried the Plaza Oaxaca restaurant (5730 N 1st St, in the SaveMart strip mall at 1st and Bullard)? I gave it a try a couple of weekends ago and LOVED it. They put chunks of potatoes in the burritos, which I assume is a Oaxacan specialty. Does anyone know any other good Oaxacan-style Mexican restaurants out there?

Comments:

we're looking at buying a house, and somehow my wife came across a listing for M. For $140,000. That's pretty good real estate. I asked her if we could live there.

She said no.

Well, Will, you wouldn't be buying the 'real estate' that is 'M.' That's owned by the Tower Theatre family.

You'd just be buying the opportunity to put something in there, and you'd be buying the fabulous 'name' that is 'M!'

Donald, from what (little) I understand, 'M' is re-opening soon as a restaurant so that it DOES earn all the permit status it needs to continue as a dance club on Th-Sa nights. Seems it can't just be a thump-thump club without serving food also, so food will reluctantly return.

Meanwhile, one of my fave places Veni Vidi Vici has had to file for bankruptcy. No word on how that will affect the future of some great food and cocktails.

And I think as long as Palomino's keeps bringing in the crowds with the best Filet and food in town, Paul won't likely be in a hurry to update his signage.

Yo, Donald:
Try the eponymous Oaxaca Restaurant on Belmont. Very authentic and tasty. They are a community source for the mammoth flour tortillas that are one characteristic of Oaxacan cuisine. I've been told the things are flown into Fresno every day, and Oaxacan folks come from miles around to pick up supplies.
We've had a couple of less than perfectly pleasant experiences at the First and Bullard place, and haven't been back.

Stephen, the small sign at Palomino's doesn't bother me. If that's what works for the restaurant, fine. What bugs me (personal pet peeve, I guess; it annoys me when stores close down and leave their dilapidated signs behind) is the faded lettering overhead of the business that used to be there. Looks tacky. Maybe it's a landlord thing?

I didn't realize that there was a restaurant called the Palominos. Is it where Java Cafe used to be before Corporate Coffee came onto the scene?

Also, a great little Mexican food place (Mom 'n Pop style) is Julia's on Divisadero. It's only open for breakfast and lunch, and doesn't look like much -- but the food is outstanding. If you have the lunch special, you spend all of $5 for the special and an iced tea.

To Tracy: Yes, Palomino's is where Java Cafe used to be -- but I think that was a few owners ago.

Thanks for the tip on Julia's. I'll have to check it out.
