arrow Mike Oz's 10-Day Forecast: Music & More

Here's something new I dreamt up the other night. I was thinking about Kopi and his 10-day forecast (don't ask why) and I thought about doing a forecast of my own.

I don't know anything about the weather (though, I can tell ya it gets hot here). So I figured the best forecast I can offer would be about what's going on in Fresno. Thus, the Mike Oz 10-Day Forecast -- it looks at concerts and other cool events coming up in the next 10 days through words, pictures, fliers, videos and links.

Feedback would be appreciated. Do you guys like this? Should I do it more? Anything you'd change? Obviously I didn't cover everything going on, so please feel free to shout-out something you're anticipating in the next 10 days.

TODAY

  • Danish band Efterklang is at The Cellar Door tonight. Here's an e-mail I got about the show and I agree with it: "These guys are HUGE outside of the U.S. and they'll be big in the U.S. after this tour! This is going to be one of those shows that freaks everyone out." 9:30 p.m. $5. It's good stuff, check the video:

  • Wanna network? Fresno's Leading Young Professionals is having another happy-hour mixer, this time at Club Habanos. From their newsletter: "There will be Rock Band, pool, food and drinks - don't miss out on this fun-filled night with FLYP! Habanos is located 6759 North Palm Avenue at the Southwest corner of Palm and Herndon."

WEDNESDAY

  • Another chance to mingle with Fresno folk: HiS Magazine is having a release party for its new mixed martial arts-themed issue. Always a good crowd at these things. Check the flier:

  • Go scream and let out some anger with Emmure at The Exit. 6 p.m. $13. All-ages, but if you're over 40, I'm offering a warning about the volume.

THURSDAY
Busy day. These are all really good options. Choose carefully.

For more fliers, you can always check out Post No Bills.

FRIDAY

  • The Bad Plus is a progressive jazz trio, one of those bands that makes people throw around phrases like “postmodern” and “forward-thinking.” They're playing at The Cellar Door with Lunchbox. 9 p.m. $10. Because it's sorta timely, check out the band's cover of "Iron Man" on its MySpace page. Awesome!

SATURDAY

  • People who dig the type of country music that Buck Owens and Merle Haggard sang, should check out Dave Gleason. He and his Old Californio Band are performing at Yoshi Now's Hootenanny Flea Market during the day and at Club Fred in the evening. Here's a preview:

  • JazzFresno and Pangea continue the Jazz at the Terra Room concert series with Lisa's Big Night Out. From JazzFresno: "All proceeds from the monthly Jazz at the Terra Room series benefit JazzFresno. The performance will feature pianist Marco Rodriguez, guitarist Rich Severson, bassist Roy Carlson, and drummer Gary Newmark. Tickets are $12 general; $10 for JazzFresno members." THURSDAY UPDATE: JazzFresno announced this has been canceled.

SUNDAY

MONDAY
It's male vocalist night. Take your pick:

MAY 20

  • I dig this band Everybody Else, who is playing at Club Fred with San Diego's We Shot The Moon. Everybody Else owes a few things to the ’60s — its love for harmony and its name being prime example. The name comes from a Kinks B-side. It's not all old-timey music here, though, the trio has a very modern rock energy to go with those claps and fuzzy guitars. Check out "Meat Market" to see what I mean:

MAY 21

  • For Hump Day, check out The Hump. You'd usually see this funky band in the Tower District, but on this night, they're playing at Sequoia Brewing Co.'s North Fresno location at 1188 E. Champlain Dr. Here's a preview:

MAY 22
Some big names are in town for this Thursday night:

But Mike Oz, there's nothing to do in Fresno. You must have made all of these "events" up.

Really good suggestions - I concur. Here are a couple more for the weekend. If you head down to Kingsburg to see Sprawlzilla (which I highly recommend), go a little early for the Swedish Festival's delicious Swedish Pancake breakfast (7-10am) and parade (10:30am) before enjoying the amazing Sprawzilla performace.

Also if you didn't quite get your fill of noshing at the Taste of the Tower (always a great event), then head out to Sanger for the "Taste of the Trails" event with wineries and restaurants located near the blossom & fruit trail sampling their wares (tickets - 875-4575) - Only in Fresno can you enjoy such a diverse and tasty set of offerings!

Awesome list Mike, Ten Day Forecast and Post No Bills rock!!

I think I've referred about ten people to your blog. It is by far the easiest way to shut people up when they say "there nothing to do" You gotta love whinny adults!!

Thank You!! This is a great idea and hope to see you, the Mrs. and the Bee gang on Sunday at Sierra Vista Mall for the Blues and Art for a Cure.

I'll approve of this ONLY if you include bad weather related jokes and what not. For example:

"I predict it's gonna be HOT on Tuesday when Efterklang roles into town!"

Just make sure your jokes are better, which shouldn't be a stretch.

I'll try to make some dumb jokes next time...

As for Efterklang rolling into town, check out their big ol' tour bus chillin' in Visalia. Promoter Aaron Gomes sent the pic and wrote, "Biggest $5 show ever!"

The bus might actually be bigger than Howie & Son's.

this beautiful & brilliant presentation is all you need to "get a life"...
SO many things to do in Fresno!
in 10 days, we should all be sleep deprived and smiling from all the fun we had...

thanks mike oz!

I like this 10-day forecast and the format. In terms of content, I like the fact that you have included some videos in lieu of a flyer which are great promo teasers, and highlighted events which occur only once or a few times a year (e.g., Battle of the Bartenders) for organizations that benefit the community. Strong work!

Great concept! I definitely think you should keep it going.

never under estimate the power of "The KOPI"...
I too predict a hot evening when the INNER EAR puts it down for the 559 spokenword style!
Welcome to the big city, have you heard?!

Question Mike, I heard rumors that The Last Goodnight would be playing Club Fred next week, but I see no mention of it here and it's not on the Club Fred list - any clue?

It was supposed to happen -- but I heard earlier in the week from the band's publicist that the show had been postponed and that they were working on another date in Fresno.

I don't know anything beyond that.

If I hear something more, I'll post it.
