New Fresno radio station shuts up and rocks
At noon today, a new radio station launched in town -- The Blaze, 105.1, FM. It's starting with 5,000 uninterrupted songs in a row. The music selection should please classic rock fans.
From a press release:
When we asked how to improve radio here, people said there is way too much talk and chatter. They told us, “Just shut up and rock!” And so we are ...105.1 THE BLAZE will play the very best music from Aerosmith, Metallica, U2, Stone Temple Pilots, Van Halen, ZZ Top, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and many more of your all time favorites!
The station occupies the old spot on the dial of Spanish station, La Buena (FM, KLBN), which moved to 101.9.
Who has listened to The Blaze? What do you think? p.s. This makes sense now.

Ahhh, yes. I thought I was the only one who didn't understand that comment.

Good thing there's no talk--then they might have to
actually hire a DJ, and the DJs might actually make
choices as to what songs are played (a quaint old-fashioned idea) rather than just play their 5000-Song mega-ipod.
---and will they play the same two songs by Aerosmith, Eric Clapton, Pink Floyd, et al that we've heard a gazillionbillion times? mmmmmm can't wait to hear Layla---the gazillionth and fortieth time.
(Are you saying that Deep Purple did more than just Smoke on the Water? that The Who did more than....wait they might actually play 3 or FOUR songs by them....Won't Get Fooled Again, etc....but will they play "Getting in Tune" or anything from Quadrophenia?....)
GEEZ, boys and girls the above is a real bad example of
showing off bad attitude and bad posting, I mean I haven't even LISTENED to this station yet. Bad Bad me. In fact, I probably deserve to be called bad names....
But BETTER YET.
I'd looooooooooooooooooooooooove to be proved wrong.
I'll tune them in tomorrow.

Did we really need another Jack/The Fox format?
It would be great if someone did an 80's format. Like Sirrus First Wave station. Then I might start listening to local radio again.

YES! You'll NEVER believe this. HECK YEAH!
-----so I forgot to tune in this station until I'm driving home from my school gig ("Open House" tonight). So, at exactly 7:45pm I tune into this new station and hear the very tail end of a pre-recorded plug (as if everysinglething on a station like this isn't pre-recorded)
saying in that big tractorpullvoice: the 5,000 songs begin now..
and then YES YOU GUESSED IT...LAYLA....the opening riff there it was . GEEEEZ. It's not even like I tuned in when they were in the middle of the song. Or not even like I had to hear Steve Miller singing "Fly Like an Eagle" THEN LAYLA----no freakin' Layla right off the bat.
-----Ok, I do realize one song doesn't label the whole station---but this was pretty dang hilarious.
----Truly, many of those 'classic rock' bands recorded oodles and oodles of albums (some of the good even) and for how MANY years do we have to hear the same two songs from each of them? (well, at least until that generation is dead I suppose and the one or two after them that find it nostalgic).
I'll try again tomorrow, but I'm scared to make a prediction this time.
thank the Lord for 88.1 and 90.7

Worried that Blake might be right, I reluctantly turned on my radio today. Of course JackFM came on first, playing a Pink Floyd tune.
So I tuned down to the new station, and lo and behold! THEY'RE PLAYING THE EXACT SAME SONG!!!!!!!!!
:::sigh::: Blake, as usual, was right on, it seems. And at least JackFM is funny, has good fillers, and I still marvel at their initial PR/radio theme as they started up. I really thought there was about to be PornRadio in Fresno! Brilliant.

Yes, some people are stuck on Classic Rock and only classic rock for life. Some people would like to burn every Doobie Brothers and Eric Clapton album ever made.
I still contend that some strong music was made by some very popular bands during this era (like all other eras), BUT the standard Classic Rock formula is sooooo predictable and boring.
Even if you stuck to the 'well-known purveyors of Classic Rock', a fantastic playlist could be assembled from the 95% of their catalogues that the "Classic Rock" programmers do not include. In fact, a station that purposely avoided the 5% that has been run into the ground might be really refreshing:
Imagine a set something like this:
Rolling Stones "Monkey Man"
Led Zeppelin "Ten Years Gone"
Aerosmith "Toys in the Attic"
Pink Floyd "Fearless"
The Beatles "I Dig a Pony"
Deep Purple "Lazy"
The Doors "When the Music's Over"
Crosby Stills & Nash "Deja Vu"
---all of these hugely popular bands, with strong tracks that aren't Layla. I've even included some relatively popular tracks that were on the radio 'in their day'.
Imagine if someone really put their head and heart into this.
Though there's satellite radio, music blogs, etc. these days it would be fun if broadcast radio could reinvent themselves and become relevant again...or at least try.

Blake said, "... Imagine a set something like this:

Led Zeppelin "Ten Years Gone" ..."
That is a playlist I'd listen to. Just took my first listen during lunch. Predictable. For example, Def Leppard's "Rock of Ages."

For the fourth time, I did the ol' 'let's do a quick check of what's on that new station:
"Layla".
Ok, that's 2 out of 4 times?
I think they are living out the cliche'.

I was listening to the New Blaze 105.1 station the other day and started off hearing "Bad to the bone", after about 7 more songs guess what ?, "Bad to the bone" played again. I am not kidding here either.
