Zabka in Fresno: Cobra Kai never dies!
The Beehive's Mike Oz and Heather McLane recap the Fresno Grizzlies' Totally Rad '80s Night with special guest William Zabka (aka Johnny Lawrence from "The Karate Kid") ...
Mike: I was more excited about Billy Zabka coming to Fresno than pretty much anybody ever. I love "The Karate Kid" so much that I dressed up as the shower for Halloween once. What can I say? So Thursday morning, I put on my Cobra Kai T-shirt for the first time in a while and was amped at the prospect of saying whattup to and snapping a picture with Johnny Lawrence.
Heather: As excited as I was, I knew it didn't compare to what you were feeling. Prior to showing up at The Chuk, I imagined meeting Zabka for you would be the equivalent of me meeting Jim Halpert, though obviously with far more sexual tension between you and Johnny Lawrence. I felt like a proud mom, as I made sure to grab my video camera and extra batteries for the momentous occasion.
Mike: My tension was more of "would it happen?" I had tried to set up some sort of meeting beforehand, where we could do a video interview and post it on The Beehive, but that fell through. In fact, we walked into The Chuk with no real plan. I was hoping my Karate Kid radar would lead to me Zabka. The next best thing was the Grizzlies' Scott Carter – who, as you can tell from the picture below, really embraced the '80s theme. Scott directed us to the field, where Billy was meeting people and signing autographs. I was so there.
Heather: I don't know what I was expecting from Billy Zabka, but I was actually kind of surprised when I saw him. He's still really young looking, and that intense glare that he adopted during many of his films in the '80s has been replaced by really kind eyes. In fact, he was downright cute. Am I gushing? I might be gushing.
Mike: Yeah, he seemed really cool and down to earth, willing to not just take pictures but chat with people about random stuff – like the architecture in downtown Fresno. I guess this is the point where we post our pictures. Heather, yours, I think, needs some explaining.
Heather: Yeah, I typically don't look so exuberant in photos. Mrs. Oz was kind enough to suggest Billy and I take a photo together, and it was Billy who proposed that we do it "prom-style." He put his arm around me and grabbed my hand, and that's pretty much when I blacked out, because all I remember after that is babbling incoherently at the poor man about Fresno. If I'd had my wits about me, I would have mimed punching him out like Ali punched out Johnny did in the country club scene in Karate Kid. He was just so darn nice, I was completely distracted and didn't ask any of the Karate Kid questions that have been rolling around in my brain all week.
Mike: He said "No mercy" to me after giving me what I think is the secret Cobra Kai handshake, which means I'm now part of the gang and have the right to sweep legs all around the greater Fresno area. He must have been impressed by my T-shirt. He asked if I bought it just for last night, to which I answered that I had in fact owned the shirt for many years. A fairweather fan I am not.
Heather: No sir, you are the real deal Holyfield. Speaking of champs, I feel we should give props to the Grizzlies promotional team: the '80s theme was genius, and they really went all out with it. Not only that, unlike my first experience with Thirsty Thursday, this one went way more smoothly. The beer lines were much more manageable, though that may have had something to do with the fact that we showed up an hour before the game started. Here's a helpful hint, people: they start serving the $1 beer at 6 p.m. After a couple of pre-game brews, the lines that form during the game don't seem so bad.
Mike: I loved the different stuff the Grizzlies did to really embrace the '80s night concept – like trading out the opposing team's mug shots for Garbage Pail Kids and using pics of folks like Kirk Cameron and Michael J. Fox for the Griz players. I was worried, though, that the crowd wasn't really in tune with the Karate Kid and the '80s. For a while, I thought I was the only guy with a Cobra Kai shirt. Eventually, we ran into a bunch. And, there was a nice line of people waiting to meet the Great Johnny Lawrence. So I guess my faith was restored in the good people of Fresno.
Heather: All in all, I'd say it was a fun and special Thursday evening with Billy Zabka and the Fresno Grizzlies. What say you, Mike Oz?
Mike Oz: I think it was good times indeed. Grizzlies, should you be looking to bring another cool person to town, might I suggest Bob from "La Bamba"? As for the game, I'm going to turn it over to the biggest Karate Kid fan I know, Populus, who will give his recap:

Comments:
Bob is a great idea. After he throws out the first pitch, I want him to grab the mike and yell "Rickeyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy".

I love that Populus had exactly ZERO $1 beers, and still managed to give the drunkest recap in Grizzlies history.

I absolutely postively had an amazingly wonderful time last night!!! Billy was SO down to earth, we talked about music and how I looked like his high school girlfriend (I was decked out the raddest 80's duds) Definitely a "homerun" for the Grizzlies in event planning!!! I'm sorry I didn't get to meet YOU fine folk, but maybe at the next soiree!
