arrow Fres-Know: Pastry fans in the Tower are still in Lauck

Beehive blogger/Fresno Bee reporter extraordinaire Michael Oz is having one of those weeks, so I offered to help him out on the blogging side by taking over the Fres-Know feature today. He made me promise not to mention Indiana Jones, so I won't (except that I just did, sucka!).

Here's local news and stuff from the blogosphere that you need to Fres-know:

WELCOME ABOARD: Bee reporter Paula Lloyd joins the blogosphere with a new blog based on her feature "Ask Me," in which readers submit questions about local history and other topics of Fresno interest. [Bee News Blog]

BAKED FRESH: Mourning the closing of Lauck's Bakery in the Tower District? Blogger Ed Stewart ignores traffic laws to get photos of the newly opened Panaderia Natalie's, which has set up shop in the old Lauck's location, as well as construction on the old Drug Fair. [estewartartist]

THAT'S JUST COLD, MAN: There's a special place in hell for people who beat up and rob the ice cream man. [The Bee]

FRESNO FOCUSED: The Fresnan continues its Focused on Fresno series with what is hopefully a new running feature: "Where in Fresno is This?" Love the idea, though the Fresnan may want to learn the subtle art of giving people time to guess first before he gives up the answer. [The Fresnan - LANGUAGE]

CRACK A WINDOW: The heat wave may be over for the week, but it'll be back. Take care of your pets, people. And, you know, maybe your kids, too. [ABC 30]

well, to be honest, i didn't really ignore traffic laws. i made a u turn by making two lefts (one off of maroa onto fern, one into the dollar tree lot) and then drove over to the drug fair lot and parked.

but i was honestly giddy as i went in there. but i didn't buy anything. next time.

Come on, Ed - I was trying to make you appear reckless and cool, going to any lengths to bring a story to the Fresno public.

Heather, I think you meant to say, "going to any lengths to grab some media attention and try to catch up to Adam on blog visitor counts."

you mean being in blog wars and blogger olympics doesn't make me seem reckless and cool?

perhaps i need to rethink my strategy. and life.

and adam, why don't you go and post another kid rock song?

(that's right, i'm starting a blog war with my podcast co-host.)

No need, I've been getting tons of hits everyday for Google image searches (a lot for my tattoo actually). Booyah.

And I don't need all those hateful Kid Rock fans on my blog again.

With all due respect to Mike Oz, Heather blogging about Fresno rocks man. F!@c*ing rocks.

Where Ed found giddy excitement, I found disappointment. The crappy homedrawn sign on the door of Lauck's announces the grand opening of this panaderia, and the inside looks like a sidewalk stand.

It's a pale comparison to the history and taste of Laucks, which will be missed (but not enough to keep it open, apparently). So what I don't get is, if Lauck's couldn't keep it's doors open, how is Natalie planning on pulling it off with less product and handmade signage??

Ah, the Tower. One step forward...two steps back. (Case in point...how's Tower Tattoos looking, folks? Oh, not open? How 'bout that surf joint? Or Studio 637? Coconut Club? M Restaurant?? Tapas????)

Here's a Stockholm Royale toast to all who manage to open there and make it work: Paul Palomino, Susan with Rousseau, Paulith and Million Elephant, Blockbuster, Bobby Salazars, Steve/Mike and the Starline Grill, and hopefully Mr. Sushi. Hang in there all....

Stephen, hopefully Natalie will keep change in the register. I don't know how many times I had to walk out of Lauck's because they didn't have change for a $20 bill.

Can anyone please explain to me the usage of the lot next to the bakery and it's farmer's market?

Who owns the lot? Why do they end so early in the day in the late spring when it's not dark till 8pm? Can they really rope it off so no one can park there at night? Will they stay when a much needed grocery store finally opens? Never did understand why it was ropped off at night when it can be used by the two theaters and others.

Thanks.

tower tattoo's looks great...at their current shop. their future shop still hasn't opened. this is partially due to the fact that they were originally going to be in the space that mr. sushi now occupies.

as for natalie's, we'll all see. the same with the grocery store that is in our near future.

why wasn't that lady who left her son in her car arrested on the spot? was it because she was shopping at Fig Garden Village? there is no excuse, no damn excuse to leave your kids in the car all by themselves. whether it's to go shopping for coach purses or losing your money at the casinos, kids shouldn't be left alone in a car. whether it's 100 degrees or 80 degrees. don't pinche do it, people make me sick.

whoah, mdub, thanks for putting that last one up...
I just assumed that this was a link to (the other more noted,) events.

This is sort of odd, I mean, there's practically a full National Guard Take down over the situation at the casino, (last week or so,) with TONS of reaction.
-Here?
A ticket and no arrest on the site (despite two high profile situations of the same type within the month, and this kid seen as being emotionally upset and sweating profusely...)

It does make one wonder a bit if, in this case it was a matter of 'location, location, location.'

It's still a mindblower...
This town is NOT geographically that big, and a few blocks here or there seems to make such a difference.

I cannot guess why there was a difference in how the parents were treated, but if location really makes that big of a difference in law enforcement, there would not be police staked out in front of the Dirty Olive, or hovering in the parking lot in front of Roe and Twist every Saturday night, or parked on Audubon in front of Woodward Park every week day looking for drunk drivers and/or speeders.

...good point, and I myself have written on such things (particularly about the DUI stuff, -to me DUI is punishable regardless of social class, racial class, geography... etc, I'm just glad to see those folks off the road.)

Without inferring?,
It would seem strange that the other cases of 'kids left in cars,' had such vehement coverage and reaction (justifiably,)
-where this was kind of 'she was given a ticket, cps was checking it out, -and she drove away...'
--Now, considering the fear that CPS strikes into the hearts of so many (once you're 'in the system, your 'in the system for good,')
I realize that this wasn't a simple slap on the wrist... She's documented and there has been complaint and charge, which will not go away.

But, --as reported, and compared to the previous stories?
It sorta DOES look like a slap on the wrist.
Whether it is true or not, it really does look like preferential treatment.

Main thing is: the kid's okay, and that they're going after this stupidity.
