arrow A uniquely Fresno weekend?

I got this e-mail today last night and thought I'd toss it out to you guys in a Beehive-powers-activate kinda way:

My mom, cousin, and baby niece will be in town this weekend from SoCal. Got any ideas of stuff to do? Sudz in the City is out of the question with the baby. I like to take them to do/see/taste things unique to Fresno (i.e., not Riverpark).

After the jump, you can check out my response. But for this e-mailer and future people trying to plan a uniquely Fresno weekend, what would you suggest?

From Mike Oz:
First off, you have to know that stuff with kids is not my specialty, so I don't have as many answers ....

Here's some of my ideas:
- The Underground Gardens open this weekend, so that's something that might be family fun and certainly unique to Fresno.

- Hit up Woodward Park for a picnic (I'd recommend stopping at Deli Delicious at Palm/Nees then taking your food to the park). That's kid friendly.

- Walk around the Tower, hitting up some of the shops, stopping at Irene's or Landmark for lunch or dinner.

- Old Town Clovis is good for antique shopping and whatnot. There's a bunch of food and stuff out there too. I'm sure my parents would like that.

- Either Arte Americas or the Fresno Art Museum might be a fun stop.

- A good breakfast stop is Patio Cafe in Fig Garden Village -- plus, that's a nice place to go and see.

Hope that helps. For all things not-child related, there's always Post No Bills.

Saturday is the annual Terrace Block Sale (between Clinton and Wishon)... worth a nice morning walk. They start at 6 AM and go till about noonish.

Also might hit up the Chaffee Zoo while down near the Tower. The weather should be good this weekend for animal viewing now that it's cooled down a bit. Go before triple digits really set in and all the animals are passed out in the shade with blocks of ice and frozen treats strewn about.

there are also fuego games @ the chuck on friday night and sunday afternoon. if the weather keeps up, both would be nice.

cafe corazon always gets a piece of my heart. and my wallet, too. stroll the fulton mall on saturday after a cup of coffee and baked good. shoot, they could hit up corazon early, eat some food, drink some coffee, read the undercurrent, and then stroll the mall. when they've worked up a lunch appetite they could visit either coney island, milano or tommy's. all are good eats. if they really like walking they can crush down kern street from the mall and hit savannah's brazilian soul.

woodward park is good, but so is roeding. and, roeding has playland. i forget the name, but they have a crazy fun ride that is sort of the big octopus contraption that turns while lifting you up and down and your cart whips around. and, they've recently added another new ride.

the zoo. enough said.

You caught me at a moment when I'm obsessed with Google Maps. I just started this as a lark.
Central San Joaquin Valley Tourism and listed the site and a couple more you just mentioned. I'll keep adding, but will probably make it available for public editing soon.

In the meantime, this is interesting:

Woodward Park Library is really fun for kids. I take mine there once a week during the summer. After checking that out, be sure to reward your good parental deeds and treat yourself to a bottle of wine from Eau de Vie, which is also located at that intersection. The owners, Rick and Suzi are the nicest - a true Fresno couple. Get a bottle of local wine, and enjoy!

Yep, Duran, I'm sure mom, cousin and baby niece want to go speed dating. First off, great family activity. Second, totally unique to Fresno.

Yes! Mike Oz has his sarcasm hat on this evening.

Wait - where was that speed date thing again? I'm just asking for a friend. Yeah, that's it - a friend.
