It is Ben vs. Alex
The nominations for the “35th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards” were announced today. Categories included most of the usual suspects from talk shows to children’s programming. We won’t know until June 20 who has won. Can’t you just feel the tension?
This year’s group on nominees include the usual battles such as in the talk show category where “The View,” “Rachael Ray” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” will fight for the top honor. And of course there were numerous categories for daytime dramas.
But the real battle is in the Game Show host category. This is where white collar vs. blue caller. Veteran vs. rookie. Stander vs. sitter. Yes, I am talking about “Cash Cab’s” Ben Bailey and “Jeopardy!’s” Alex Trebek going head-to-head for the Daytime Emmy.
There hasn’t been as much tension in this category since the old Peter Marshall and Bert Convy showdowns of the ‘70s. Just as it was with those titans, arguments can be made for both this year.
Let’s start with Trebek. First the positives.
There is no question he is the coolest game show host in the business. Trebek has a way of coming across smarter than any of the contestants. He manages to keep a game show with one of the smallest payoffs exciting.
And no game show host as been spoofed as much as Trebek. He deserves all the Emmys he can get for having to endure the numerous “Jeopardy” parodies on “Saturday Night Live” with Will Ferrell as Trebek.
Now the negatives.
Trebek is Canadian. There is nothing wrong with being a Canadian. But in this era of the dollar being so weak, winning the Emmy will have a lower exchange rate if a U.S. born game show host doesn’t win.
Now for Bailey.
The biggest positive for him is his ability to multi-task. Bailey has to be able to host a game show while driving a cab through the streets of New York. Just driving in New York would make for a wild game show.
Bailey’s also able to connect with his contestants despite having his back to them most of the game. That’s charisma.
Now the negatives. Bailey is still a newcomer to the game show world. He needs to roll up a few more miles before he has earned such a distinction as an Emmy. And there really is no fear about his show being canceled. Bailey has a cab driving job if the game show ends.
In a very close race I would give my vote to Bailey.
