Get Reel Film Festival winners
There are lots of perks that come with being parents, but for Robynn and James Reilly, this one was unique: They got to be movie stars. (Sort of.) In "Ball Point," a short film that won last weekend's Best in Show award at the Get Reel Film Festival held at the Tower Theater, the Reillys played a pair of screaming/arguing parents. ("Hey, we've been married 21 years and figured we could adlib something," Robynn Reilly says.)
Her daughter, Hannah, was one of the creative forces behind the two-minute film, along with J. Ross Holly and Peter Thronson. Here's the clip on YouTube:
On the jump: More about the festival and a complete list of winners.
Gina Becker of the Fresno County Library provides results:
- Best Documentary: New Generation by Kris Allen, Sean Pritchard and Stephan Dennison
- Best PSA/ Commercial: Skin Fix by Nicole Rascon and Shayla Mondragon
- Best Broadcast: Channel 49 News by Jaime Sanchez, Jr., Alejandro Del Toro and Poala Castellanos
- Best Music Video: I Like to Read by Jordan Pyles and Zack Eagles
- Best Animation: Love Grows by Kayla Robbins
- Best Feature Short: Ball Point by J. Ross Holly, Peter Thronson and Hannah Reilly
- Audience Choice Award (voting took place at an April 2 screening): Johnny Rainbow, Justice Enforcer by Scott Beatty and Dylan Shaw
- Best of Show: Ball Point by J. Ross Holly, Peter Thronson and Hannah Reilly
Robynn Reilly, the proud mom, writes about the Best of Show winners:
All three are 17, all are home schooled, all directed but J. Ross Holly is the main director. He has also produced films for Organic Pastures Dairy Company and California Arts Academy (among others). Peter Thronson is the main actor and developed the film's concept. The screaming/arguing parents in the background are James and Robynn Reilly (hey, we've been married 21 years and figured we could adlib something!), and the music was composed, written, and performed by Hannah Reilly. You can hear the song in its entirety on MySpace by searching Hannah Reilly's music page.
These are three very gifted kids who excel in the arts as well as other subjects. Check out Peter Thronson's MySpace page to hear a song called "Father Father" that will showcase Peter's incredible talents as a musician and songwriter. I have no doubt that Fresno will lay claim to him as a favorite son in the near future. He's destined for something huge. Hannah Reilly is my daughter so I hesitate to brag on her too much but she is a junior in high school who also takes classes at Fresno State. She maintains a 4.0 there and at home and is applying for scholarships to Smittcamp and Stanford, among others. She is a gifted print artist and writer as well, and recently received top ranking (out of 40 students) in a class at Fresno State for an in-depth art critique that she wrote.
The teens who took this seriously enrich us all. It is my hope we can get the word out about this contest and encourage other kids to begin preparing for next year. Fresno has a lot to give and much of it is just coming on to the scene.

Comments:
That's a wonderful film by Hannah and J. Ross, and I judge and choose films for a living.
A huge pat on the back to them (and all the teens) for completing a film (no small task), and to all those who worked on 'Ball Point' for stepping outside the box of 'typical' teen fare.
I'm quite proud of their parents for supporting her art...they deserve as much applause as those who made this film.
GREAT JOB!

Thanks for posting this Donald. Every one of the teens who submitted should be proud. And to commenter Stephen--interested in being a judge next year?

Good work; I didn't even know about this one. Three film festivals in one year? That's pretty awesome for Fresno.
Any word on the winners from the Fresno Filmworks Film Festival this weekend, Don? There's nothing on their website about winners that I can find.
