arrow Fresno promoters needs to get their bars up

So rapper Tech N9ne was supposed to perform in Fresno on Saturday, but the show got canceled. Here's part of Tech's explanation from his blog:

When doing shows there are stipulations that each venue and promoter have to adhere to in order to have the level of show that you the fans have become accustomed to. Sound is an absolute non negotiable item. What sense does it make to go to a concert if you can not enjoy the music that you pay your hard earned money on?

In Fresno tonight, the promoter knew well in advance what the sound requirements were for the show and those requirements were not met. For the record, the crew including Tech stayed at the venue for almost 4 hours waiting for the right equipment needed to produce the show. The equipment never arrived and therefore the show did not go on.

I've yet to hear anything from the other side. But I know the promoters were 724 Promotions, who you might remember as the people who did the Free Boob Job thing. So I'm apt to side with a red-haired rapper on this one. I suppose the good news is that no one had to be subjected to a Paul Wall live set.

This also reminds of that Ed Hardy Fashion Show of a couple weeks ago that wasn't what the promoters billed. Or the whole Scary Kids Scaring Kids debacle. I know stuff happens -- but in Fresno it seems stuff happens far too often.

All i can say is that FTK will no longer be selling tickets for any type of show! Just a hassle for no money!

You hit on the worst parts of bad promotions, Bobby, in that it makes other people look bad.

FTK had nothing to do with the show's failure, but you guys have to deal with the fall-out -- as do radio stations, fans, etc.

damn that sucks. this probably will make Tech not want to come back to the No anytime soon.

i agree about the Paul Wall statement. that was the only thing that made me cringe when i saw that Tech was coming to town.

Fresno probably knew that Tech is a 'roit maker' and got scared. ::shrugs shoulders::

I've only ever had good experiences with two promoters in Fresno. Dancing Dog, who used to host bands that were on their way between SF and LA -- and Overcast, who always went out of their way to put together great bills for touring folks. (Never had anything Numbskull seemed particularly interested in putting on one of their events, but they're the only ones who still appear to be active.)

But fact is, unless an indie touring band lands on an arthop bill with Rademacher at Tokyo Garden -- chances are, they're going to get burned. Little press beyond you, no college radio support, and no audience. One experience like that, and you never want to go back.

Even the return locals get the screws taken to them. When was the Kat Jones Christmas show? By using the event information the promoter sent out to the press, I was directed to a retirement community on the opposite side of the street from the actual venue -- even if I had figured out that the venue was the building across the street (without phoning someone with internet access to just look it up online), the doors were locked and there was not a single poster or sign to acknowledge the event because the doors weren't due to be open for at least another HOUR. The start time and the street address were both listen incorrectly.

Visalia has their crap together thanks to the folks at Sound & Vision Mag. Merced and Modesto are tended to by the folks from El Olio Wolof and the folks from Off The Air, and I have never been disappointed by either.

Fresno always leaves me wondering if it was truly worth all the effort poured into it while living there. The time and energy always seems to be doing some good at ground zero, but nothing ever seems to take root. People copycat for a while, then they start to half-ass it, then everything dropped on the floor, kicked behind the couch, and forgotten. Sometimes normal life gets in the way with kids and bills and second jobs, sometimes folks just lose the ability to see anything beyond the crack pipe that always seems to make the rounds just before the latest crop of young hopefuls start to drop dead.

I want to believe it can do better, I've seen the community try. I've even been part of the community (gave it 12 years before I just couldn't take it anymore), But despite it all, There is no more Ragin' Records, there is no more Wild Blue Yonder, there is no more Cadallac Club, and if not for Tokyo Gardens (and possibly Club Fred -- though I haven't been back there in FOREVER to see what has become of their music offerings), it would get removed from indie tourmaps entirely.

I'd rather send an act to play to nobody in SLO, at least I've never been carjacked there.

Wow, I really dodged that bullet!! I almost forked out the
money to get three tickets to this mess. Lucky for me I
felt cheep that day, so I decided not to.

The local promoters really need to get their acts together.
Very unprofessional, and I know this isn't the first nor the
last debacle from said promoters.

yes, if you bought your ticket from FTK (we keep track of the ticket #s) then you can get your money back. Its one of our stipulations in our "ticket selling contract" that the promoter doesn't get the money until AFTER a confirmed successful show. The funny part is many a promoter has looked at us like we were crazy for demanding such a thing.
"oh but we need the cash before the show, you know to pay for expenses..." these guys are clowns, if your running a business you should know that you have the FRONT mucho dinero before you get it back. but thats just the thing, most aren't business men, they are just Fans trying to do too much.

so rest assured that if you ever buy a ticket from FTK, and the show gets canceled, you get your money back. our 1st priority is our customers, I'm not about to tell someone "well call this out of town cell phone number, and ask to get your money back"

but i doubt we will hassle with selling any tickets to anything in the future.

Thanks Mike for this blog forum. I was conned out of money by G & S Promotions as a sponsor of the "Official Ed Hardy" fashion event. Just days after the Ed Hardy event, I actually ran into Syrus on a business trip. I also ended up speaking with employees of Don Ed Hardy and both Ed Hardy and Syrus assured me the event was fraudulent. I am spreading the word to all innocent people who donated their money in good faith. Unethical promoters plague Fresno and gives artists justification to continue overlooking us. This blog is real ( and should be posted).
