AMERICAN IDOL: The tumult continues; Kristy Lee is out
The Michael Johns syndrome continues on "American Idol."
Johns made last week's stunning exit. On Wednesday, Kristy Lee Cook -- who lifted her game in recent shows and certainly didn't rank among the worst this week -- was rewarded with the unceremonious heave-ho.
It wasn't as dramatic as Johns' departure. But the pink slip should have been handed to the way-too-chatty and whiny Brooke White. Her performance Tuesday night was just plain abysmal, with her rushed execution and total lack of nuance or enthusiasm.
But this is is how AI rolls, sometimes. Brooke's sunny personality apparently is winning over enough supporters (from the 36 million votes cast this week) to keep her afloat ... and it's distressing because she clearly is losing traction in the poise and singing department. I'm bracing for how she's going to mangle her pick next week from the oeuvre of Broadway musical composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Man, I can't wait to read what Donald Munro thinks of Kristy Lee's ouster. Something tells me he's not going to like it ... what did you think?
UPDATE: On the jump, an irate Donald vents his mind ...
Donald says: Talk about torture. I'd rather shave my shins with a potato peeler and pour salt on the open wounds than have to listen to Brooke White croak her way through one more lackluster performance -- but that's what we'll be facing once again after America booted off a contestant with at least a smidgen of star power (Kristy Lee Cook) and kept a singer for another week who has me diving for a thesaurus looking for a synonyms for "mediocrity." If I'd had to rank the contestants this week, I would have picked Brooke to go first and then Syesha Mercado -- and only after them should Kristy Lee have been let go. You're better at this voter-analysis thing than me, Felicia, so I'd love to hear your take. I would have thought that the country contingent of voters would have given enough votes to keep Kristy Lee safe at least for another week. Brooke couldn't be pulling in that many votes from the country crowd, could she? And how much pull can a weak singer-songwriter-folkie possibly have? It's obvious that Brooke has a fan base that is for some reason inured to her whiny, soulless, charisma-free style. But I can't for the life of me figure out why.
And another thing. This is a complaint I've had in past seasons about "American Idol": The producers have an entire HOUR to announce one little measly voting result, and they still can't budget the time well enough to allow the kicked-off contestant to sing his/her last song in its entirety? Tacky-tacky-tacky.

Comments:
WHO? WHO IS VOTING FOR BROOKE????
I demand to know!
Kristi is cute, young, has a compelling story, a sweet personality, and was wowing us lately. Syesha can actually sing.
WHO is voting for Brooke?????
I don't get it. Not one little bit.

I can't believe that weeks ago everyone was begging for KLC to be dropped, and now everyone is complaining that she shouldn't have left. THAT I don't get.
She's just been lucky these past few weeks. She's never been one of the stronger female performers (again, except for Dolly week and this week- only because she "County-fied" it- and that was getting old quick) and, in my opinion, becoming a shadowy version of Carrie Underwood. She's nothing new and not very unique. Reason being why I REALLY like the remaining contestants, they're all something new, and I think the competition is REALLY going to begin now.
For the hell of it, here's how I think it will go down the next following weeks:
Brooke, Syesha, Carly. Top 3: David, David and Jason. Final 2: David and David. But, who knows...

Donald, the only way I can explain Brooke's survival is that people dig her sunny disposition. What we find annoying and cloying, they see as endearing and fun. It doesn't matter that her performances are declining week after week, or that she's way too chatty on stage. People like her shtick, and they're sticking with her.
As for T.'s comments that people complained for so long that Kristy Lee should go and now are upset she was kicked off ... well, it's true that I didn't like her at the start of this contest. But it's all about who's showing improvement and who's fading. K.L. in the past couple of weeks chose songs that fit her, performed better, looked confident and -- dare I say it? -- exuded a ray of star quality. Brooke, on the other hand, just makes me want to hit the mute button ... whether she's singing OR talking.

Felicia, Kristy Lee may have had time to complete her song if Brooke would have just shut up. She talks and talks through everything. I had expected her to be the one to go and was also surprised the KL got the boot. Brooke's singing has been ok, but not spectacular. She sings every song with the same tempo and feeling. Also, she's really starting to lose her composure. She's weepy and nervous more and more each week. That is just not star quality. I agree with T that David, David and Jason will be the final three. I'm still rooting for David A to take it all, but really any of them could be the final winner. I do think that David C seems to be getting a more spectaular showing (lights and arrangements). That adds a lot to his stage presence. It all matters: the way they sing, the way they dress and presentation.

All the girls need to go, they all suck this season. They are all beautiful girls but as far as talent goes none of them have very much talent.
