Winter guard: The competition heats up

Delano High 07.JPGIn my Sunday Spotlight column I write about the upcoming San Joaquin Valley Color Guard and Percussion Review competition that will take place Friday and Saturday at the Clovis North Educational Center. Thanks to Marco Tovar, the official photographer for the SJVCGP, here are some excellent images from past competitions, including this pic from the Delano High squad, right. (You can check out his Web site here.)

Also, the folks at Clovis East wanted me to remind people that their squads are traveling to the Winter Guard International competition in Dayton, Ohio, one week following the local finals, and they're raising money for the event. (Any Clovis Easters out there who can fill us in on the fund-raising?)

On the jump: lots more pics.

Colorguard represent!

I went to the WGI finals in Dayton, Ohio three times as part of the Clovis High Winterguard wayyyyy back in the day.

It's nice to see the guards getting some recognition.

As the parent of a Clovis High color guard member, it's good to see these kids get some recognition.

They work hard at an activity that is overlooked by many. It's not easy to catch a spinning rifle while running across a floor.

By the way, Clovis High made the finals at a regional competition in San Bernardino this weekend for the first time since 1997.

Those were the days. I wish we had great pictures and articles like this when I was in guard.

"It's not easy to catch a spinning rifle while running across a floor" ??!?!?!?

OMG.

Color guard just went from stupid to potentially right wing stupid.

Wow!!!! What amazing photos!! This photographer has captured the spirit and energy of the guard and percussion. It's great to see this local talent at work. Check out Marco Tovar's website...more amazing pics! The guard and percussion, as well as Mr. Tovar, deserve special recognition. Thanks

How about it, Clovis East guard. Tell us about the fundraiser. Aren't you band people always complaining how you never get any coverage?

Apparently our society has become so incapable of realizing talent that when they see something truly amazing they fail to recognize it.

It is great that this is getting coverage in the newspaper.

It is however unfortunate that the banish trolls like Tom can not see past all the talentless filth that the media spews, and instead just makes fun of those who can appreciate something incredible.

So thank you Tom for pointing out what you consider to be our flaws, and thusly revealing your own idiocy. It is with great respect that I ask you to go bury yourself alive.

Good luck to all the performing groups, and I hope that this kind of slanderous filth does not deter you from participating in one of the hardest competitions in the dancing world.

Same goes for all of the drumlines competing in their respective category.

Thank you Fresno Bee for not letting our kids hard work go un-noticed. They are really great performers and I love attending the shows. Of course it helps that my grandson is in the percussion unit of Clovis East (third picture down. Our entire family gets involved when we can.

Winter percussion is happy; they have free publicity
News paper is happy; they have a heart warming story
Readers are happy; they have something awesome to read about!

I composed/arranged the music for Clark intermediate’s show. I also volunteer my time with Clovis high school and Clark winter percussion.

I expect to see some great shows this weekend.

This is a great event the whole family can attend, and I'm so proud of my son, and Alta Sierra's drumline and staff for all of their hard work and dedication. All of the schools have a tremendous talent and spirit. You can't help but cheer for each one of them.

On another note, here's a fundraiser idea:

Instead of hauling the kids to practice in an SUV, why don't us SUV drivers (myself included) trade our gas monsters in for a Prius? I have seen my weekly gas bill increase from $75/week to $125/week during the last few months - kids have had more activities in school, and I sometimes have to make up to six trips a day between there and home.

Part of the money we all save on gas could go to the kids, and their teams, and we might even reduce the dependency on foreign oil.

I've been toying with the idea for months, and I'm just about ready to make the jump. I can fit four kids and all their gear into a Prius, right?

Regardless of all my dreaming of cleaner emissions and saving money, I'd like to wish all the schools good luck during this upcoming weekend. You guys rock!

I am now living up in Davis, but what about the love for the Fresno Unified Drum lines and guards? As a former Bullard drum captain and the brother in law of a former Hoover and Clovis East guard instructor/choeographer I am estatic about the coverage, but just wondering about the Fresno lines. Did they get hammered in the elementary music cuts from years ago?

To Clare:

I think your idea of trading in your SUV for a Prius is a great one. It might be a tight fit trying to fit in four kids plus all their gear, but, hey, there are enough seatbelts, and kids don't have to be chauffeured around in luxury. Donating the money you save would be a stellar way to raise funds for the band. And it would be a way to make the air a little better for their marching, too.
