ROGUE REVIEW: The Complete History of America: Abridged

The Rogue catalog picture for this production shows George Washington ala Groucho Marx and for good reason: This frolic through time is irreverent, musical (but not seriously so, of course), funny and anarchic. This was a Rogue standout in 2007, and it's returned for this year's festival, at Milano on the Fulton Mall.

Landon Weiszbrod, Luke Davis and Byron Watkins present the early history of America with the gleeful exuberance of hyper kids at play. It takes a Marx Brothers' confidence and sarcasm to do this material ... at breakneck speed.

And it's a trip to see history turned on its side and flipped on its head. That shot heard around the world that started the American Revolution? Let these guys explain to you the single bullet theory. Don't remember the names of the original 13 colonies? A rap song with its wacky rhyming scheme should help.

Armed with dozens of props for quick-change purposes, the trio at Monday's show sometimes created the raucous illusion that there's more than three people at play here. It's also the kind of frantic show that you'd have to catch more than once to take in everything that's whizzing by in less than an hour.

When it comes to this historical account, don't let the facts stand in the way. Just be prepared to have a good time.

[A production note here: Weiszbrod told me after the show that they chose Milano to bring Rogue folks into downtown because most of the Rogue events are centered around the Tower District. It's the same reason a show he's written and directed that's called "Naked" is being performed at Tokyo Garden at 1711 Fulton St.]

Playing: 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Milano, 1243 Fulton Mall. Cost: 1 person for $6, 2 for $10. Rating: PG
