arrow ROGUE REVIEW: Sprawlzilla vs. Main Street

It’s funny. It’s smart. It’s educational. The songs are catchy. “Sprawzilla vs. Main Street” is simply one of the best shows at this year’s Rogue Festival.

The show delves into the idea of unique local landmarks vs. sprawling urban growth, pitting Kingsburg father-daughter team (musician Blake Jones and 15-year-old Chelsea) against a suit-wearing, grinning, money-dangling developer named Mr. Practical (Todd Severson).

At its essence, “Sprawzilla” is a piece of musical theater, with original songs created and performed by the cast. But there’s so much more: audience participation, haikus, sing-alongs, points about public transportation and air quality, even a little bit of education (Jones is a school teacher, after all).

Blake Jones wears a conductor hat and plays both the wise narrator and the guitar, while Chelsea provides the youthful energy and keyboard backdrop. The finishing – and perhaps the best – touch is the comic relief of Severson, who wonderfully plays the grinning villain, winking and giving thumbs up as the Jones’ perform songs about “faceless hometown landscapes.”

It’s the details that make “Sprawzilla”. For instance, before the show, Mr. Practical goes around the audience handing out his business card. When Jones talks about developer John Bonadelle, Mr. Practical gives a rousing round of applause.

Also important: The show is not a one-sided rant. Though its message is clear, “Sprawlzilla” gives its opinions in a smart and though-provoking way, without being heavy handed or shaking its fingers at the audience.

The whole thing comes together masterfully, making it a must-see Rogue show. And at $4 – it’s a better bargain that that package of underwear at WalMart.

Playing: 3:45 p.m. Sunday (3/2) and 7:30 p.m. Friday (3/7) at Veni Vidi Vici, 1116 N. Fulton St. Cost: $4. Rating: PG.

***** - 5 STARS!!!!
This is the BEST Rogue show I've ever had the pleasure to be a part of...and by that I mean there is ample audience participation.
I laughed...I cried...the smile never left my face even though this is a serious topic which we are, hopefully, all concerned with as Fresno Citizens.
Do yourself and our fair city (not to mention Kingsburg) a favor and see this show 7:30 Friday (3/7) at Veni Vidi Vici.
I predict this will be THE most talked about Rogue show this year.
And to think it all started with a 15 year old wondering what might become of her home town if left to the big developers devices...I am already planning my "Elect Miss Chelsea Jones" bumper stickers!
Bravo...still clapping.

Operation Rezone the Musical??? This show had so much energy and good information I felt like I was watching "Schoolhouse Rock: Community Planning Rock." I loved this show and I am trying to get all of my friends to come back and see this with me. I say we demand a showing for the Fresno and Clovis City Councils. Fabulous!.

Operation Rezone is alive and well in Fresno, CA.
45+/- yrs of felony alerting of our water lines in preparation of re-routing the water, in order to get around the water laws that prohibit development beyond Friant?
Take a good look around at what has been done from one end of this city to the other. Clamped sewer and water lines on all property is a good place to start.
