ROGUE REVIEW: Brass Ring Presents a Night of Musical Scenes
Every year at the Rogue there should be a mystery performance -- one of those listings that you have absolutely no idea what you're getting into. For me, this was A Night of Musical Scenes staged by a group called Brass Ring Productions. Better yet, this mystery group is performing at a mystery place: a venue called "Superior ATM" way out on Blythe Avenue just north of Shaw. (It's one of the examples of a Rogue BYOV, or Bring Your Own Venue, though most of the off-site locations are closer to the Tower District and downtown.)
My interest was piqued. Would I arrive and find a bank of ATM machines ready to dispense cash in case I didn't have enough for a ticket? Would it be a full-fledged little theater smack in the middle of an office park? Any chance there'd be any spare $20 bills laying around?
It turns out that the venue is in a fairly nondescript office space -- the kind that has sort of a warehouse feel, with a big steel door that you can roll up and down. Director Brittany Zenz has created a tiny, boxy stage marked off by black curtains and featuring a couple of stage lights. The chairs for the audience were arranged in a cleared-out office, but there are still the mail slots on the wall complete with UPS envelopes.
The 10 performers went on to stage 12 scenes from various Broadway musicals. Each was fully costumed, and it's clear that a lot of work went into this performance.
I'm still not exactly sure who these performers are -- whether they're simply a group of friends who love musical theater, or starting a new company, or if any of them have professional aspirations. (If any of them could further illuminate me via this blog, that'd be wonderful.) All I know is that I'm almost surprised that there are 10 young people in Fresno who seem to be as enthusiastic about musical theater as I am, to the extent of actually organizing and staging their own revue. It's kind of sweet. A couple of weeks ago, I was in New York and finally got to see the youth-themed musical "Spring Awakening," and I was struck by how many people in their 20s and younger were in the audience. It seems to bode well for the future of Broadway.
Among the scenes staged are numbers from "The Wild Party," "Avenue Q," "Rent" and "Chicago." Skill level and vocal talent vary. I can sense some promise in particular from Amanda Biggs, who performs a nice "In His Eyes" from "Jekyll & Hyde," and Amber Creager, who has the makings of a Broadway belt in "Adelaide's Lament" from "Guys and Dolls." Sarah Lane and Kendal Kubo have some sweet chemistry in "Therapy" from "Tick, Tick ... Boom." And a vibrant rendition of "Cell Black Tango," from "Chicago," featuring the ladies of the ensemble, is high-spirited and nicely choreographed by Biggs and Lianne Neptune.
I question some of the song choices simply they're so difficult. "Big Ass Rock" from "The Full Monty," for example, is a tough-tough-tough number to pull off. And I think I would have tried to give some of the scenes a little more context by filling the audience in on the characters and situation.
Also, a purely logistical suggestion: The way that the performance space is set up, there's an adjoining office used by the off-stage cast that has a window with blinds. Because of a light source in that room, the audience can see at least an outline of everything going on inside. I vote for a black drape.
All in all, this show was a nice little Rogue adventure, and I have to admire the spirit of all involved. I'm not sure I can recommend it to anyone but musical-theater fanatics, but it does have some nice moments.
Playing: 8:30 p.m. Thursday 3/6, 8:30 p.m. Friday 3/7, 8:30 p.m. Saturday 3/8 at Superior ATM, 5184 N. Blythe. Cost: $7. Rating: R.

This show is the premiere of Brittany's Theater Company, Brass Ring Productions. We're all a bunch of friends who got together to do the show, though some of us have previous performing experience and/or are persuing theater as a career.
I am a first year Theatre Arts major at Fresno State. My brother, Chad Neptune, is the same major at Fresno City College.

This was my first experience being in a Musical/Theatre event, and I hope it is not the last! I am happy to be a part of such a magical experience. Brittany did a wonderful job putting all of this together and I have learned alot about what production takes from start to finish. I also had the privilege of hosting the show as a radio announcer. Most everyone that was involved in this show is going to school and working full time, so bravo to the crew of amazingness! As for me, I am living in LA, pursuing acting and going to school. This life is what you make of it.. Cheers!!!
