The Friday Five: The out-of-retirement/Super Bowl edition
Inspired by Super Bowl Weekend and The Fresnan, I'm bringing back The Friday Five this week. Here are five things happening this weekend that have the Mike Oz stamp of approval and, thankfully, have nothing to do with Hannah Montana.
1. The Shape & The Spirit
SoCal band Delta Spirit is playing Saturday night at Starline, a day after playing a sold-out show in West Hollywood. They're making moves and they've got a nice sound. Check it on MySpace. Local faves The Same Shape come out of hiding to play with them. Should be a good one. Link for details: Love the Captive.
2. Get ya laugh on ...
Feather Da Wyz is hosting another of his stand-up comedy shows, full of comics from around the state. It's going down at 9 p.m. Saturday at the 600 Club at Chukchansi Park. Link for details: myspace.com/allaboutfeather.
3. Toast to Top Shelf
Saturday night is the opening of Top Shelf, a new club night at Salsa's, at Palm and Herndon. Grand opening festivities include appearances by Shauvon from MTV's "The Real World" and MMA champion Doug "The Rhino" Marshall. Meanwhile, DJ Jimmy Martinez will be playing house and electro. Link for details: G & S Events and Nightlife.
4. Roe, Roe, Roe your Bowl ...
Roe is hosting a Super Bowl party with food, giveaways, a bikini contest and DJ Clint Storm spinning after the game. The MySpace gossip network says that NFL players Bernard Berrian, Therrian Fontenot and Paul Williams are supposed to be there -- but it's MySpace, so believe what you will. Link for details: Check the flier.
5. Party for Mardi
Aside from being Super Bowl, Sunday is also Mardi Gras in the Tower. The parade along Olive Avenue starts at 1 p.m. A good post-parade pick is Glen Delpit and the Subterraneans playing at Audie's Olympic (for former Club Fred). That starts at 3 p.m. Link for details: Tower District / Audie's Olympic.
