Extreme Makeover: Downtown Bar Edition
It hardly looks like the place that hosted a Celtic music festival and bloody midget wrestling. In fact, the soon-to-open 2039 Ultralounge looks like it's doing everything it can to distance itself from that past. Look at that slick bar.
2039 sound familiar? As in Kern Street. It's the former address of Fagan's Irish Pub, which closed in early 2007, as well as Diamond Sports Bar and Bunz before that.
But it was Fagan's that earned the most attention, turning the location into a legitimate downtown destination for live music, drinks and hanging out before and after Grizzlies games -- up until its embattled demise.
We'll have to wait and see what happens with 2039, but my first impression says the swanky makeover is quite impressive and a step in the right direction. Go to the lounge's MySpace page for more pics and info.
In other nightlife news: It looks like Twist is coming along, too.

i'm sure you get this all the time, but thanks for keeping us up to date with what's going on with Downtown. That bar looks very nice. Like with all new restaurants and bars that open in Fresno, I'm sure the opening months will be pretty busy, until the next big thing comes along. I just hope it has staying power.
one of things that I've always felt with Downtown bars opening in Fresno is that the Fresno PD always uses its scare tactics by watching people like hawks. I understand DUI's are a problem and harm innocent people. But in order for Downtown to take off, you need a lot of bars and restaurants. You look at every major city downtown and the nightlife is what keeps downtowns alive. I see Fulton Mall as Fresno's own State Street in Santa Barbara. Everytime I walk through Fulton Mall, I envision a State Street like atmosphere with restaurants, bars, and shops all mixed in.
I don't understand why the Powers that be in Fresno don't see that same vision. Whenever bars are brought up, it seems like the next thing said is all the trouble and DUI's that will follow. I can't stand that argument. Give something a chance before you shoot it down with all the possible DUI's that will follow.
Make Fulton Mall into Fresno's own State Street of Santa Barbara!!! That is the way!!!!!

it is not illegal to drink and drive in california.
really, it's not.
it is illegal to drive while 0.08 or above, or under the influence.
a common perception is that 1 or 2 beers will make you dui.
in fact, a 190lb man who drinks 4 drinks (beers, glasses of wine, or mixed drinks) in 2 hrs will still be below 0.08 (if you don't believe me, check the 2008 ca dmv handbook).
of course, the official disclaimer (i am an attorney after all) is that drinking any amount of alcohol can potentially affect your driving.
if you are pulled over at a checkpoint, or stopped by a patrol officer who doesn't see you signal a turn, and you are honest and say you had one or two beers in two hours, you will likely be pulled out of your car, checked for warrants, field sobriety tested, and perhaps even arrested, cited, and/or taken to jail (especially if you do the smart thing and request a blood test rather than breath).
this can take a half hour or all night.
this is not a minor inconvenience.
even though you are presumed to be NOT under the influence at under 0.05. (for this one check VC 23610(a)(1) and the handbook.)
which means all this could happen to you even though you are presumed not guilty of any crime.
this is why people are scared. even when it's legal.
so forget about state street for now.
(last disclaimer - don't drink in your car, and don't drink if you're under 21, and it's different for commercial drivers, and there's lots of other rules too.)

Tight!!! Now that's a LOUNGE!!! LOL@ all these other places in Fresno calling themselves lounges just cuz tha trend has hit Fresno. I'm not talking about tha new ones (that are actually lounges), but tha old ones that have always been a nightclub until they heard that lounge sounds more "cool". I find that funny. We are a funny little city.
Props to 2039, Twist, Cabo Wabo, Cafe Corazon, Milano, and Roe!!! Keep 'em coming. People will appreciate all of you when you're all up and running. Options are good :-)

we will have to make bets on if that place will even last till 2039.
another trendy over priced bar, as long as they are not jerks or over book bands and charge too much maybe they will make it, but I'm doubtful.
