arrow Magazine profiles Christmas Tree Lane

Fresno's Christmas Tree Lane knocks the socks off of Peter Fish, author of Sunset magazine's Postcards and Western Wanderings essays.

Writes Fish in the December issue: For a long time, I saw the spirit of Christmas as a plump, white-bearded, Santa-ish figure — like Jack Black if you glued cotton to his chin. But now I know who the spirit of Christmas truly is. He is a 49-year-old engineer named Dean Alexander.

xmaslane.jpgAlexander, of course, lives in Old Fig Garden on Van Ness Boulevard and is responsible for the lighted Christmas scene that slows traffic -- and crowds -- to a crawl every year.

If you still haven't figured it out, his house is the one with the trains, clocks towers and artificial snow.

Alexander is the star of the show every December, but Christmas Tree Lane comes together through the efforts of hundreds of volunteers.

It was nice of the magazine to notice. Even nicer that Sunset would draw readers in with this headline: In Fresno, California, the spirit of Christmas triumphs once again

You can check out the article here.

Christmas Tree Lane will open Saturday, Dec. 1 and run through Dec. 26. There are two Walk Nights this year when the lane is closed to vehicles -- the first night on Dec. 1 and Thursday, Dec. 11. Additional info is available here.
