More from the Oz List ...
In my column this week, I introduced the Oz List, my own list of pop culture recommendations. I big-upped Superbad, Clark and Michael, Common, the new Harold & Kumar teaser, and Dexter, among other totally awesome things.
There were many totally awesome things I wasn't able to mention, but still deserve a shout-out, such as ...
- "The Boondocks" season two trailer -- Hella funny. Hella NSFW. Watch, if you dare.
- A Fine Frenzy -- The guy who introduced hella people to Amy Winehouse and Lily Allen -- go ask around -- is now recommending you check out 22-year-old singer/pianist Alison Sudol, who goes by A Fine Frenzy. Listen at MySpace.
- "Ace of Cakes" -- I generally try to avoid the Food Network -- unless Giada De Laurentiis is showing off her
goodsfood -- but I can't front on "Ace of Cakes." It's such a simple treat in the world of crazy reality TV -- no competition, no manufactured drama, just fun.
- "Nickels & Dimes" by Scissors for Lefty -- Ever since SF indie dudes Scissors for Lefty played in Fresno in June, I've been obsessed with their song "Nickels & Dimes." Sample it on the band's MySpace or check out a live version via YouTube.
- "American Gladiators" -- Oh hell yeah! Prayers answered, folks. NBC is bringing back "American Gladiators." You know you've been watching it on ESPN Classic too. Shout out to Nitro.
Watch for more Oz-List recommendations here on The Beehive.

Comments:
Ahhh Chef Duff and his infectious giggle ha. Great show and makes even me, a non-dolly-domestic want to bake.

A Fine Frenzy is great, but I never would've taken you for a fan. I think Sara Bareilles should be a candidate for your next recommendation of female pop act in need of a bit of a push.

Jason:
I'll check out Sara.
As for taking me for a fan -- I try to keep up with a lot of different stuff, even if it's not necessarily what I'm into ...

Word up to Nitro, an SJSU alum just like Mike OZ.

Mike: I'm an almost 50 mom and teacher & I love to read your column each Friday. You help me be "in the know" w/ pop culture...even though I sometimes don't know what you're talking about! I think you're a great writer & have such a bright future.

Cindy, I'm right there with ya. I don't know what Mike Oz is saying half the time - and I live with him :)

It has nothing to do with the Oz list, but I wanted to say how much I enjoyed the piece on Rick Mirigian promoting the Beyonce concert. I had no idea he was doing that, and the piece was a great insight into the business of promoting. Great job Mike, the story had me hanging on every paragraph.

I gotta jump in on what DC was saying; I agree, I really like the Rick Mirigian article. I won't be going but it made me want to go just so Rick could break even. I'll be interested to see how many tickets get sold in the end.
Maybe we'll see some Mike-Oz-post-show-video-interviews after the show.

Since DChild posted here, I'll do the same.
GREAT job on the Rick Mirigian piece. Wish you had another 20 inches to 'finish' the thing. Be sure and Beehive how the show went sales-wise and Rick's reactions to his success/non-success.
Now you've now received compliments from two pretty talented writers! Good job, kid!

Thanks for all the nice comments on the Mirigian story.
And don't worry, I'm gonna be keep tracking of him all day today and posting stuff on the Beehive, then eventually in the paper on Thursday.

Mike,
I heard that Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth) was playing at that little pizza place in Visalia for a Halloween Party on Oct. 31.
Is that true?

Boondocks is funny. I wish the comic were still being made. The guy basically walked away from it, ala Dave Chappelle's walking away from his show.
