EARL.JPGThe final box office totals for the weekend show that the live-action version of "Underdog" took in $11.6 million. That didn't make "Underdog" a champion at the box office, but is not too bad considering the film was not shown to any print journalists.

Jason Lee, who provides the voice of "Underdog," was at the recent Television Critics Association meeting to talk about how his network series, "My Name Is Earl," fits in the NBC Thursday night lineup.

One thing is certain. The actor can not be accused of taking that opportunity to over hype his new film.

The subject of the film comes up during the interview. Here's how it went.

Question: So, you have the new "Underdog" movie coming out.

Lee: "Yes."

Q: Are you a big underdog fan?

Lee: "No."

Q: In the film, Underdog doesn't talk in rhyme like he did in the cartoons. Was that your decision or in the script?

Lee: "It was in the script."

Q: Do you know why you were picked as the voice?

Lee: "I might have been the only one who applied."

Wow. I haven't been around somebody so laid back since a visit to the Coma Museum. That kind of reaction, coupled with the fact the film was not shown to print critics, can only suggest one thing: there's a reason to fear, "Underdog" is here.

Lee should at least find a way to be excited about a movie role. It isn't as if he agreed to star in a live action version of "Alvin & The Chipmunks." Oh, wait. Yes he has. That film hits theaters later this year. Maybe Lee will have 16 words to say about that role.

Perhaps he was encouraged to focus on his television show at that particular event. NBC may have had some influence on his behavior, or maybe he just really hated working on the film.
