TV news makes me want to cut myself
CBS 47 did us all a favor and investigated the crazed world of emo music. Go watch their report. You have to. You cannot proceed until you do. Back? OK, good.
Emo followers wear black and might EVEN do drugs! Quick! Cut off your kids' ears!
Please tell me what the point of that was? To scare parents stupid? To make the emo kids want to cut themselves more once their parents start asking them a bunch of questions? To make people think there's some evil monster out there called emo who's turning kids on to stupid haircuts, tight jeans and whiny music? To walk around the mall? To slander Jimmy Eat World and Fugazi (seriously, where did that list of "popular emo bands" come from?) To keep showing people how out of touch the mainstream news media is?
I agree with Stereogum, edluv and Comic Book Guy from "The Simpsons" on this one. Worst. Journalism. Ever.

Comments:
They did the same story on 2 Live Crew when I was in high school. I never liked 2 Live Crew and I hate Emo. And Emo kids are just a bunch of kids expressing their repressed white rage because mommy would not buy them a pair of khakis at Bananna Republic when they were younger. Just buy your kids some Gap and Old Navy preppy-wear and keep boys away from girl pants and Emo music.

Oh please! the same garbage was being written back when I was listening to the Cure. There's a lot of parents out there who want to blame their kid's behavior on everyone and everything else. Sorry folks, you can't ignore your children and then wonder what is wrong with them.

seriously. this was bad. funny...but bad. i agree with the previous post. i mean, we are taught now as a society that it is okay to point the finger and blame everyting on something else.
as a musician, to portray yourself is one thing that is so cherished in this country, but often overlooked. we can write whatever we want, but how that affects people is up to them. ask a compser such as Cuban-appointed Leo Brouwer how much of a privelage it is to write what you want...but then again, he's not being blamed for suicidal tendancies now, is he?
its almost comical to watch such reporting, however tv and the media give the green light, llowing our society to blame musicians/artist for their kids behavior. its easier to point the finger than to take the grunt.
just like we did with 2 live crew, snoop and even back with someone like Junior Walker in the Motown days, music is always the target of a breakdown in society. but the old saying holds true, "when you point the finger at someone, take a look at how many point right back to you.'

And they said the same thing about the punk rockers, the hippies, the so-called drug culture, the beatniks, sex-crazed teenagers, and marijuana smokers. I'll bet the Neanderthals said it about the Cro-Magnons (the more things change, the more they stay the same.)

I have to agree with YesterGoth and Jay Rossette. "EMO" is just short for emotional, music has always been emotional from N.W.A expressing there anger, The Cure, Duran Duran pouring their hearts out about and telling the world about love and lost love, and Metallica writing songs like one!So for people to slander music because its changing the minds of young kids guess what, thats what music does!
But that doesn't mean it makes your kid do things. I do not want to sound rude after this comment but, that can be your fault as a parent not being there for your kid before things got rough in there lives.
So before you start to ask your child ridiculous questions be there friend and not their buddy because friends can say no but buddies wont! Start off small and make little changes because a drastic move can kill your relationship before you start it. Quit pointing your finger on musican's because they're expressing their feelings or just telling a made up story. If you really want to blame them for something stupid
get at them for the clothes they wear! the music speaks for its self, its good, it's bad or how did they ever put that on the radio.

Kendall, I think I'm in love with you. The Neanderthal comment is just too funny.

Out of touch? Yeah, that's harsh. Don't laugh. As you know Mike, I work at CBS 47. I can't believe how many phone calls we got from kids after that story aired! I like our news and I love the people I work with, but this one was...well...no comment. It was like the way the story was framed was as if someone took a cue from the freakin' PMRC in its campaign against Metal. Same old stuff--different generation. The 50's had Elvis and the 60's had The Beatles. In the 70's, we had Sabbath, Zeppelin and Judas Priest. In the 80's, it was Heavy Metal and Punk. In the 90's it was Nirvana and Rap. Here's the deal, just because someone likes Emo music, doesn't necessarily mean he or she is into Emo culture (which was portrayed in a stereotypically one-dimensional way). I mean, c'mon people. I love Metal, but that doesn't mean I walk around in studded leathers, ride a Harley and have big hair. It just means I like the music.

that wasnt funny at all! that was horrible news reporting! if theyre going to go as far as doing a story on a genre of music/ clique of kids and say "emo kids" then why did they ask all the "preps" who have absolutely no f***ing clue about music past the billboard top 40? they were RIGHT outside hot topic and yes that store is the butt of a lot of jokes but the ppl behind the counter could tell you right away that its no different than any music style. theres how its done right and theres the crazies. the people that are f****ed up already and latch on to the wrong things (fans) and the bands that use shock value to promote themselves...cash in on the fad (manson did this quite well, but hes also really smart).
and wait a minute, like 5 years ago weren't ppl calling acoustic music (dashboard confessional, john mayer..etc) music emo? when did whiny post pop-punk bands become the new emo? because they downtuned their guitar and started singing in a higher key?
last gripe: why attack my chemical romance? cuz its easy? if they read one f***ing bio of the band theyd know the horrible things that have happened and why they still succeed. like Gerard's drug addiction and how he almost committed suicide....but that he bounced back with the help of friends and every show they preach unity and friendship. they never yell show me your tits or anything hateful or morbid. sure the images can be but they wouldn't be entertaining the crowd or writing the lyrics if they themselves didn't fell the same way at one point. they and their music is all about saying "all those people that give you sh**t? f**k them you're better than that".
this is all stupid high school bulls**t. uninformed idiots scaring the out of touch parents. im not even going to touch on the cutting bulls**t. no i will. music wont make you cut. if youre down low enough to physically harm yourself...if you know somebody like this...its not a fad GET THEM HELP! thats like the same s**t when kids hear about a kid shows gonna bring a gun to school then theyre shocked he did it...warning signs people...read em. no band would ever write a song with the intention to harm others. its expression. metallica got s**t for ppl killing themselves after fade to black, a few ppl did after adam's song by blink. songs dont force people over the edge. if youre at that point already, mcdonalds f**king up your order could throw you over the edge.
another S**t news story thrown together by out of touch dips***s. i felt like i was watching a high school presentation for a class.

I noticed that, about the preppy little mallsters being asked and not kids who portray Emo. And everyone and their mother shops at Hot Topic, now. Asking someone just because they're coming out of that store doesn't = understanding the music.

I’m a school nurse & you wouldn’t believe how many of the “emo” kids cut. They call themselves “emo,” by the way. We’ve sent at least a dozen kids to the local psychiatric hospital for self-injury and suicidal ideation just during this school year. I was pretty confused about the whole “emo” thing until one of the kids showed me the website http://whatisemo.bravehost.com/. Once I saw that site, I understand the issue much better; please take the time to view this and protect yourself and your loved ones.

A lot of 'regular' kids cut too. Please take the time to not stereotype. However, they are rarely pinpointed because they look 'normal'. Please take the time to look beyond your personal issues with appearances and protect the hundreds of other kids you're ignoring because they may be putting on a good front.
The site you've posted is frighteningly one sided and far too simplistic to take seriously. I am a happily married parent of a bright and healthy kid and listen to Emo music, wear black all of the time and the only marks on my arms come from trimming the rose bushes in my yard.
Educate yourself. Emo kids don't all cut. Kids who cut and dress Emo are ASKING for attention, they want to be found out.
It's pretty much the flack the Goths got in the 70's and 80's. We were all supposed to be worshipping the devil, ya know.

I have an issue with appearances. The appearance of cuts and scars on too many of the kids! Our total number of self identified emo kids sent to the psychiatric unit is now at 15 for the school year. That's not a stereotype. That's an observable fact.
The person that made the website that I linked agrees with you. They did say that "not all emos cut, and not all cutters are emo." They say it at least twice on the site. I guess you didn't see that. My judgments are based on what the kids tell me, and the cuts they show me.
Teen fashion is always changing. I'm sure that in our meetings before next school year, one topic of discussion will be what the kids will be wearing this year. It's kind of a joke. Sometimes we never can tell. I don't judge on appearance. Every generation has a style. Ours didn't involve scarring ourselves.
