'Something' good
A girlfriend gave me the chick flick "Something New" for Christmas, and I just got a chance to see it this week. What a surprising gem! The 2006 film (rated PG-13) stars Sanaa Lathan and Simon Baker in a story about finding love in an unexpected place. It's about a woman (successful corporate lawyer) and a man (a landscape architect). She's kind of uptight. He's a free spirit. Oh, and she's African-American, and he's white.
She continues:
The film deals with their cultural differences, the reactions of her friends and family, and her expectations in a mate -- or what she thought were her expectations. The movie also presents a side of African-American life rarely shown by Hollywood filmmakers -- successful career professionals. I'm baffled that more people didn't see this movie (another blunder by Hollywood marketers?).
Its strongest assets are the two lead actors who share a wonderful chemistry on screen. "Something New" isn't laugh-out-loud funny, and there are plot coincidences you have to just go with. But it is romantic and heartfelt, a definite cut above the usual chick flicks that Hollywood grinds out.
Thanks for the tip. It's always good to hear about recommendations for stuff out on DVD, especially the smaller titles that you might overlook at the video store. "Something New" did get a decent-sized release when it came out last year (at its widest it played at 1,265 theaters), but it stalled at the box office, taking in only $11.5 milllion.

Comments:
"Something New" is playing on HBO every 30 minutes. Thanks for the tip - I'll have to check it out.
