arrow REVIEW: My Chemical Romance at Selland Arena

Rather than simply spouting off about what I thought about the My Chemical Romance show Wednesday night at Selland Arena, I did something a little different. I took a video camera out and went up to people after the show and asked, "What did you think?" Here's the result. (Warning: Language is NSFW)

Oh, and don't worry, my spouting off about the show is below.

My show review

A few seconds after the lights dimmed Wednesday night at Selland Arena, a stretcher rolled out to centerstage. Then up popped Gerard Way. The My Chemical Romance frontman jumped to life, still wearing a hospital gown, mind you, and belted right into "Dead!" A bit morbid, yes -- but what do you expect from MCR?

From there, Gerard didn't have to do much to win over the Fresno crowd. He pranced around the stage, his face covered with white make-up and a know-it-all grin. you almost felt if The Joker from "Batman" had a kid who started a rock band, this was it.

He kept referring to the band as "The Black Parade," keeping up the charade the group started on its latest CD, that The Black Parade was a different entity than My Chemical Romance. And in this parade, Gerard was the charasmatic grand marshall.

Of course, the mostly teenage crowd ate up every word like cereal. The crowd-surfing, shrieks and cell phones lighting up the arena air proved it. None of them seemed to care that a lot of the singing was almost inaudible. Of course, the pyro and fire shooting from the stage was a nice distraction.

Halfway though the 90-minute set, The Black Parade said goodbye, alluding to the show being over. No one was really fooled. The lights never went up. And five minutes later, My Chemical Romance hit the stage (as itself this time), complete with stage adjustment and new outfits.

It thundered through songs from its breakout album, "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge," adding more thrash than we heard in the epic-sounding "Black Parade" songs.

As MCR finished up its set with it's big hit "Helena," Gerard blew a kiss to the crowd and, just like the song's chorus, said "so long and goodnight."

Great video. Thanks for that little slice of the Fresno music scene.

I especially like that you credited everyone at the end - a lot of videographers don't bother to do that.
