arrow Weekend in Review: Same Shape, Super Lucky Catz, comedy at Babylon and more

sameshape.jpgHere's what I did this weekend. What about you? If you saw a good local show (or a bad one), leave a comment tell us about it.

FRIDAY
Starline was the site of a state-spanning rock show with locals The Same Shape, San Francisco band The Stone Foxes and L.A.'s No More Kings.

No More Kings started things off. They're playfully poppy, digging into a lot of '80s pop culture. They have songs based on Charlie Brown, "Knight Rider" and "The Karate Kid."

In fact, the video for their single "Sweep the Leg" (the "Karate Kid" song) has been getting some nice attention since it debuted on Friday. (Check out my Q & A from Friday's paper with frontman Pete Mitchell, if you missed it.)

On stage, No More Kings were as fun as they sound. Mitchell was charismatic and the band seemed to go over well with the crowd, most of whom I'm guessing probably didn't know much about them.

The Stone Foxes were next. They're a trio based out of the Bay Area, but their roots are here. Music-wise, their roots are back in '60s and '70s rock. And for a young band (they all still get carded at the bar, for sure) they play the music with wisdom and originality. They're definitely worth keeping an eye on.

For part of the Stone Foxes set and the intermission, I walked over to Babylon, where a comedy show was being put on Feather Da Wyz. It was his first at Babylon after moving the monthly shows from La Ryan Event Center.

I was amazed at the crowd. There were at least 250 people, maybe closer to 300 -- the biggest crowd I had seen in Babylon in some time. Going in, I wasn't sure how they'd pull off a comedy show in the billiards club, but the set up was fine and everybody seemed to be enjoying themselves. Look for this to continue on a monthly basis, with out-of-town comics coming to headline.

Back at Starline, headliners The Same Shape were owning the Starline stage. Once probably the busiest band in town, Same Shape had slowed down its live gigs a bit as of late. But judging from their performance, they're not slipping.

They play good rock 'n' roll. It's not trendy or flashy, but it's tight, interesting and engaging. If you haven't seem them, do so. Soon.

Linkage: Here are some pics from the show via Same Shape's MySpace blog.

SATURDAY
I've seen Super Lucky Catz perform maybe a half-dozen times. They're one of my favorite bands in town. But I've never seen a better performance from the band than I did Saturday night at Full Circle Brewing Co.

It was the band's CD release party for "What's Your Favorite Colour?" and the the Catz certainly out-did themselves. As SLC shows often do, things started mellow with a duo performance, but as the night went on, guests kept coming on stage, adding to the sound.

First it was violinist Patrick Contreras. Then the full SLC band came up, complete with back-up singers. Then came a cello, congas from Jason Williams and Latin guitar from Jay Rossette. A harmonica player was even pulled out of the audience for a song.

The show moved from the Catz' usual soulful sound into a more Dave Matthews-esque jam-band sound, culminating with about 10 people on stage and lots of dancing in the crowd.

It's good to hear that Contreras is going to be a more frequent addition to the Super Lucky Catz -- he really complements the band well.

After the show, it was off to Veni Vidi Vici, where DJs F-Plus and Don D were spinning a tribute to James Brown.

It was too cold to enjoy the spacious patio at Venis, so the inside was crowded. We were told the bar was near capacity, so it would hard to get drinks -- but really, it wasn't.

The vibe and the music were great -- plenty of funky James Brown classics mixed with hip-hop songs that sampled them. That meant West Coast funk from the likes of Dr. Dre and Ice Cube plus boom-bappy joints from Black Sheep.
