arrow The Friday Five: Celebrate Local Music weekend

sixounce.jpgAt this very moment right now, I've decided this should be Celebrate Local Music weekend. Why? I dunno. Lots of good local shows, I guess.

Below are my top five picks. If you want more of what's going on this weekend, check out the music roundup or the calendar.

1. Tower Records Farewell Concert
As we get closer to the forever-closing of Tower Records' doors, the store is hosting an daylong concert with local rock bands Six Ounce Gloves, Speakers for the Dead, It'll Grow Back, DDF and Some Kind of Wonderful. It starts at noon on Sunday and is free.

2. 40 Watt Hype / Supercharger @ Starline
If you're one of the few people around town who have never been to a 40 Watt Hype show, here's your the chance. 40 Watt uses funky Latin-style horns as a backdrop for its bilingual raps, and the band is getting bigger by the month -- the band's CDs are in stores nationally now. Tonight at Starline, the Hype will be joined by rock band Supercharger. $7.

3. Six Ounce Gloves / Stoneshiver / Gatja @ The Belmont
This is a stacked night of local rock. Of course, Six Ounce rocks. And while the group has been out on the road, Stoneshiver has risen to become one of the top hard rock bands in town. Gatja, meanwhile, has been on the scene for a while and is hitting it hard now with the release of a new CD scheduled for next week. The show starts at 7 p.m. Saturday at The Belmont. $10.

4. Monkey / Hobo Erotic @ Starline
Bay Area ska band Monkey headlines the "ska extravaganza" at 9 p.m. Saturday at Starline. Locals Hobo Erotic, which bills itself as criminal ska, also performs, as well as The Jokes and reggae group Mah'Op. $7.

5. Love Pollution / All Good Things / Hender Pust @ Club Fred
This should be something for everyone. Indie-ish rock with Love Pollution, funk with All Good Things and alt-rockers Hender Pust out of Hanford. It's going down at 9 p.m. Saturday. $5.
