A tribe in meltdown

Jellyfish 'n' chips finds the tribes battling for snack foods, alcohol and a diving trip. It's also a record setting episode as Ulong -- once again -- cannot figure out how to win immunity. Oh, and James takes yet another step toward bringing the people of the world together.

Week six opens up on night 12 as Ulong makes its way back to camp after voting out one of their challenge-winning members Angie. With Ibrehem coming home (he won immunity) there's just a slight bit of tension between the swiftly dwindling tribe.

"That may have been the craziest tribal council I have ever been to," Ibrehem says. "From walking in, believing that I was going to be voted off, but then the tide got turned and the other tribe ended up giving me immunity."

James and Stephenie feel they've got a handle on how to win and start a bit of a lecture on what should happen at the next challenge. Listening, it seems, is important.

"I was pissed at you really, you wasn't paying attention today," James says to Ibrehem. "You cost us the game, 'cause you didn't pay attention."

"Ain't none of us perfect," Ibrehem reminds James. Something he should remember since James is pretty much the reason the tribe lost the build-a-bathroom challenge.

Bobby Jon stays quiet during the encounter, smart enough to wait until his private shots to give his thoughts.

"Win as a team, lose as a team," he says.

The next morning we get to see a bit more of Ibrehem as he goes through his morning prayers.

"The way things happen, I almost think God had a hand in it," he says about tribal council. "I feel like I'm definetly meant to be here. I think you appreciate things a little more when it's almost taken away from you . I think I got a whole new grasp on it."

Animal cutaway: crane catches fish!

Koror's doing much better back at their beach. Willard's no longer with them, but they're all feeling the benefits of a hearty beef stew dinner. No, they didn't eat Willard, they won the last reward challenge.

"Right away you start to feel this of energy back," Ian says. "The crew woke up this morning battery charged up and refreshed."

Tom, Ian, Gregg, Coby and Caryn are all hard at work building something. Katie takes a bit of a different path.

"Camp Koror had craft day," Coby says. "Well, just Katie, everybody else was working. Didn't help with the fire. Didn't go hunt. Didn't do anything. But she made necklaces, God love her."

And Katie does seem to be having fun making some braided necklaces out of what appears to be twine. It's not clear if she notices everyone else doing actual work or not.

"I feel great; I really do," the Valley's Katie says. "I thought it would be harder than this. And it will be, and I'm prepared for that. So I think that if you keep that state of mind then you can survive."

She takes that devil-may-care attitude and gives lessons to people on how to make her necklaces. Caryn, as you can guess, seems impressed.

"I would like to see Katie work a little harder and move a little faster," Caryn says. "It appears that she's just here to entertain. She sings, she's cheerful, she makes a lot of jokes, but what is her role here? I don't know."

Apparently her role is as sock puppeter mocking the Ulongs as the next scene shows.

Later, Katie and Janu return with tree mail and a single potato chip.

"Guess what it has on it," Katie yells on their way back to camp. "Guess! It starts with a P! And ends with an 'el'! Pringles!" *sigh* you can just see the irritation in her tribemate's faces.

After reading the mail's little ditty about taking a shot, the tribe shares the single chip and Katie does a semi-creepy growl thing to egg on the tribe.

The challenge this time is to use a replica of a .50 small class cannon to knock out 8 tribe-color tiles. The first tribe to knock out all eight of their tiles will leave the island on a Japanese boat, enjoy a snack of Pringles and mai-tais (just what they need according to my blog-mate: alcohol after starvation). While they eat, they'll be boating to Jellyfish Lake, home to millions of stingless jellyfish. Then they'll all get a chance to snorkel.

So let's look at this again: 13 days of starvation, a gun, potato chips, alcohol and diving with jellyfish. I could think of better rewards.

Koror, still only one man short, sits out Katie, Janu, Jenn and Ian. This is not a physical challenge and they have all their physical players up, setting themselves up for a potentially disasterous immunity challenge later on.

To spare ya'll the heavily edited challenge, here's the gist:

The sight is apparently not perfect and it takes quite a while for someone to hit the first tile. Tom, by the way, makes that first shot. And this is after James strides up with all the confidence in the world because he's shot many a gun before, apparently. Stephenie carries Ulong, making all of her three shots. James, not so much carrying Ulong, makes none of his shots ("I'm doggin' it today, ain't I," he says at one point). Bobby Jon also does well, and Ibrehem makes a succesful shot.

For Koror, Tom, Gregg, Coby and Caryn all make shots, but it's not enough. Ulong wins the reward challenge 8 to 7. The unasked question is if they can win immunity.

Host Jeff, evidently still watching a different season of 'Survivor,' says Koror hasn't experienced much defeat in the past 13 days. Apparently he's forgotten about the many immunity challenges they've been lackluster on.

Ulong does ride the high of their win for a while, though.

"It was such a nice feeling to know what it's like to win again," Stephenie says. "I knew that we needed this to boost our spirits and morale. It basically was a whole new chapter for us."

On the long boat are many Pringles Prints (feel the product placement love) and mai tais. The tribe enjoys their drinks and quiz each with the questions on the chips. We get many, many shots of the chips and the printing on them.

Bobby Jon brings the tribe together with a toast.

"And this toast is called 'From Here on Out,'" he says. "From here on out we win and keep going with the tide." It's hard not to like BJ.

After making their way to the island, the four tribe mates have to make a climb and then find a crystal clear lake.

The shots are amazing, the lake is teeming with the floating creatures. The contestants swim along the top of the water and dive to its depths, surrounded by the jellyfish and the clear, blue water.

"You're swimming in the water and all the sudden you say 'Oh, there's a jellyfish' and then five minutes later you're with millions," Bobby Jon says. "It's kind of like a europhoc type of feeling. I just kind of wanted to cherish every second 'cause I was at a place in this world where I won't ever go again."

Stephenie says it was a great trip for everyone.

"We feel strong and we feel happy," she says. "We feel like a tribe again."

Koror's having a bit of a different experience has a tough storm and some strong gusting wind assaults their camp. Tom and Ian sound confident that nothing's going to break their super shelter, but the weather seems to be giving it it's best shot.

"I don't know what the hell that was," Ian says the next morning, "but it wasn't paradise in Palau, that's for sure."

Janu would agree with him -- she's had the toughest night.

"Last night was the first night that I felt so vulnerable," the Vegas showgirl says. "I just felt very alone and scared. but I ended up getting through the night, but it kind of has just lingered on into the day."

Tom spends some time with Janu, trying to boost her spirits.

"You've already passed you're worst fear of going home early," he tells her. "You're going to make the merge. I think you're going to be on the jury, and if most of us aren't careful, we're going to be on the jury voting on you."

"I don't have the strength," she replies.

"You don't have it today, I agree with you, but you have it," reassures Tom.

Katie's got a bit of different perspective.

"Janu is losing it," she says. "She gets totally caught up in her head and she's just like in the coccoon and in the hammock. ... I thought I was the drama queen, but apparently not."

On day 14 at the Ulong camp, Ibrehem brings back a footlocker from tree mail. The locker contains a flag and a telegram intructing the tribe to make the box as impenetrable as possible using only the rope they've been given. They've got the enemies flag and they've got to make it impossible for Koror to get into it. The footlocker, tied up and ready, must be taken to the immunity challenge.

James claims he's got the perfect way to win -- one impossible knot.

"James says he was in the Navy," Bobby Jon says. "We spent a lot of time tying this one knot tha the says, that when you pull on it it's just going to get real, real tight. He took the lead and he acted like he knew what he was doing, so I followed."

Steph says she's sure they're going to win.

At the challenge beach, Koror and Ulong show up looking pretty confident. Host Jeff explains the rules for today. The footlockers they brought will be used. First, each tribe will have 20 minutes to swim out and bring back three bundles of wood tied in the ocean. They can then use that wood to make a fortress around the footlocker, hopefully making it even harder to get into. After the 20 minutes, the tribes will switch and will start to try to open their own chest, retrieve their flag and run it up a nearby flagpole. The first tribe to raise their flag wins immunity.

For this challenge, Koror has to sit out the four people who took part in the earlier reward challenge. That means most of their physical team is on the sidelines: Tom, Gregg, Coby and Caryn. Katie gets to take part in a immunity challenge and prove herself a bit more.

For Ulong, Ibrehem swims out halfway while Bobby Jon and Stephenie go all the way to the wood bundles. James stays back on the beach and fiddles with his toga a bit. Whether he's playing the part of the fool is debatable.

For Koror, Katie and Janu stay on the beach and add more knots to their enemy's footlocker (there are a few sticks and some rope available on the beach) as Ian and Jenn swim out to the water.

Ulong gets all three of its wood bundles in quick fashion as Jenn comes back with the first load for Koror. At this point Ulong is all working on their fortress as Ian comes back with the last load of lumber for Koror.

Coby's getting nervous on the sidelines.

"I think they're getting ahead of us," he whispers to Caryn.

The fortresses the tribes build are a hodge podge, looking more like a bonfire than anything else. When the tribes start trying to get into their footlocker, the first minutes are all spent just tossing off wood laying on top of the box.

Ulong takes an early lead and Stephenie isn't impressed at all with the knots. But they also start to slow down first as Koror just seems to get more and more speedy. Koror gets the footlocker first and opens it without a problem. James' impossible knot apparently cannot withstand Janu's teeth. Stephenie looks on, a bit disgusted, as Koror raises their flag. Once again, Ulong has flamed out during an immunity challenge. Koror wins their fifth straight immunity challenge.

With the rate Ulong is losing members, there's really no reason to have a merge. They're going to be down to three members after tonight and they're sure to be divided.

And, really, with the way James was so sure of his knot and then spent precious challenge time futzing with his toga, is there much doubt who's going to get voted off?

After the commercial, we're back at camp with the Ulong tribe.

"When it comes to tonight at tribal, the only criteria I'm going to go with is whoever I think has done the worst out of all these immunity challenges," Ibrehem says in a private interview. "So it will most likely be for ... James."

Stephenie and James spend some time together thinking about who to vote for. James is sure that Bobby Jon will not vote for him, Stephenie has some questions about that. James just wants Ibrehem gone.

"Ibrehem has overstayed his welcome," James says in a private interview. "He was meant to go last time and by the grace of Allah, he didn't go. So now, my god says he is today."

Really, he said that. I swear.

Bobby Jon is thinking through his vote for the evening. He's pretty sure James voted for him at the last tribal council.

"I'm thinking James threw a dart at me, and I'm going to throw one at him," he says.

He and Steph talk about the last vote. Steph swears she didn't vote for him, that she voted for Angie. Now, this is partially true. She did vote for Angie in the tie-breaker, but it was her vote in the first round that sent BJ into that tie-breaker.

"I don't like to lie," she says. "But this was in the midst of deciding who we were going to vote out tonight, so there's no way in hell I could have told him the truth. So I said 'I swear to God it wasn't me.'"

Bobby Jon comes up with another plan, if Stephenie votes for James, she and BJ can vote Ibrehem off next time.

"At this point in the game, I'm looking at the future," Bobby Jon says. "And I don't think I can get to the end with Ibrehem. So it will definelty be me and Stephenie all the way to the end. If she's playing me we'll find out, but I don't think she is."

Stephenie controls this week now.

At tribal council Host Jeff starts right in on James and the losing record.

"When we hear the word immunity," James explains, "I think we subconsciencely sabotage ourselves."

Host Jeff then talks about the last challenge and the fact that James messed around on the beach for minutes while the rest of the team gave their all.

"That's not what held us up," James explains.

Next, Ibrehem gets to talk about what the game has done for him.

"It's really opened my eyes to what I can do, rather than what I can't," he says.

Jeff darts back to James and asks whether he can use the same criteria as last week -- performance on the most recent challenge -- to make his vote.

"No, it's not fair to just base my vote directly toward a challenge. It's camp life. Personality. ..." he says.

Stephenie talks about the dwindling numbers and the losing streak.

"The fact remains that I want to win at least one immunity," she says. "I don't want to leave here being the tribe that never won immunity."

Trust is the issue Bobby Jon gets tossed.

"If you don't trust 'em [his tribe mates], you shouldn't be in a tribe with 'em," he says. "I do trust every one of them."

Steph says she trusts the three guys. Then we find out the guys are all with Alabama.

"That paranoia sets in for me every time we come here," Stephenie says about the chance the guys could gang up on her. "But the fact remains that I've worked my butt off and I've done the best I could and I've done really well so far."

The vote:
Bobby Jon
James votes for Ibrehem: "Sorry, Ibrehem, you and I just don't get along. We clash. Bye."
Ibrehem votes for James "Sorry, brother."
Stephenie walks up confidently, but then pauses. And pauses. And pauses. Uh oh. Someone's having second thoughts.

The vote tally:
James
Ibrehem
James
Ibrehem

That means they go to a tie breaker vote: only the people not in contention will vote. That means Bobby Jon and Stephenie will make this week's decision.

The tie-breaker vote tally:
James
James

Steph apologizes to James as he gathers his torch and heads toward Host Jeff.

"I understand, ya'll," he says before his fire gets snuffed out.

After sending off James, Host Jeff gives the tribe some "encouraging" words.

"Well, Ulong, this is a first," he says. "A tribe of three; six straight tribal councils. Maybe tonight's vote made a difference. If not, I'll be seeing you here real soon."

Next on Survivor (back to Thursdays, by the way):

Real fish!
Run! Shark!

James' credit comments:
"It wasn't my time to go; I didn't feel like it. My gut told me nobody's going to vote me off. My gut failed me. And I'm sad and depressed. But I've accomplished things that not many people can say they have and that makes me proud. And I'm glad that I got a chance to go on 'Survivor' and see if I have what it takes."
